This year’s SNR(S) September trip was a packed four days in London, starting with a tour of the Golden Hinde – a replica of Sir Francis Drake’s privateering galleon. A swift trip downriver by Thames Clipper brought us to our Greenwich hotel for the evening. The following day was spent in Greenwich visiting the Painted Hall with its extraordinary trompe l’oeil designs and the maritime museum. Unfortunately, the Queen’s House was closed for a change of exhibit so we had a little more time on our hands than planned. Thursday brought visits to the Cutty Sark and HMS Belfast – her forward guns supposedly aimed at South Mimms Services as an illustration of their range. Finally, we discovered the Docklands Museum, a fascinating site which I knew nothing about, and rounded off the day with a wander around the Imperial War
Museum.
Thanks are once again due to David for arranging the programme and keeping things on track, to our patient and skilful driver Kenneth, and to Richard for producing a thoughtful handout putting the elements of the trip into historical context.
